Regional Representative

Prof. D. Suba Chandran is the Dean of the School of Conflict and Security Studies at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore. He heads two programmes: Conflict Resolution & Peace Research and Science, Technology and International Relations.

His primary focus areas are Pakistan, Afghanistan, Armed Conflicts, and Peace Processes in South Asia. He is currently researching on two themes: Conflict Peripheries—examining why most conflict regions are located in geographic corners; and Peace Gap—exploring why peace does not prevail despite the end of violence. He leads the International Peace Research Initiative (IPRI) at NIAS and teaches an online course on peace research.

Prof. Chandran edits the annual Armed Conflicts in South Asia, published by Routledge/SAGE. He is an Associate at the Pakistan Study Research Unit (PSRU), University of Durham, UK. He has also been a Visiting Professor at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and a Visiting Fellow at several institutions, including the University of Bradford (UK), University of Urbana-Champaign (USA), and the University of Jammu (India).

He holds a PhD in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and an MA in Political Science from Madras Christian College (MCC), Chennai. Until 2015, he was Director at the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS), New Delhi.
