SRI LANKA
The National Peace Council (NPC) has operated since 1995 to sustain democratic
engagement and reconciliation efforts in Sri Lanka, particularly during periods of
institutional distrust and political uncertainty.
NPC consistently advocates that Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict requires a political
solution based on interethnic power sharing, pluralism, and inclusive governance.
Its work integrates dialogue, advocacy, research, and problem-solving through
district and local interreligious committees nationwide.
NPC has helped prevent and defuse interethnic and interreligious tensions, mediate
local disputes, and collaborate with public officials to address grievances before
they escalate. These platforms have strengthened cooperation among religious
leaders and enhanced local peacebuilding outcomes.
In addition, NPC works with state institutions to promote inclusive governance
through training public officials, accredited university courses, mobile
documentation clinics, and sustained engagement on accountability and
transitional justice, preserving space for pluralism and peaceful political solutions.
