As part of the NIAS Climate Change, Civil Society and Peace (C3SP) initiative in collaboration with GPPAC South Asia, the inaugural workshop of 'The Grass Roots,' the NIAS Youth Network on Climate Change, Civil Society and Peace, was held on 03 June 2026 at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru. During the workshop, young scholars from institutions across India examined the role of civil society organisations (CSOs) in responding to climate change through a poster presentation exercise. As part of this initiative, Yesasvi Koganti, an undergraduate student in the Department of Political Science at Madras Christian College, Chennai, documented the work of the VISVA Sustainable Foundation, a Hyderabad-based environmental organisation.
This note examines how the VISVA Sustainable Foundation is promoting sustainable consumption and waste reduction through community clean-up drives, zero-waste event management, environmental education, and citizen engagement. It highlights how grassroots participation, behavioural change, and circular waste management practices can reduce environmental pollution, divert waste from landfills, and contribute to more sustainable and climate-resilient urban communities.
The Volunteers for International Sustainability Value Achievements (VISVA) Foundation for sustainability is a Section 8 not-for-profit organization. The organization is dedicated to enhancing the relationship between the human race and the environment. Based in Hyderabad, the organization is run by a professional board of directors. It also has a diverse "Squad" of lead volunteers, including architects, IT specialists, and medical doctors. This multi-disciplinary team oversees sustainability initiatives at every level, from grassroots lake cleanups to providing waste management consultancy at the top level. Their influence also reaches the cities where the "Outstation" drives are held, like Vizag, Vijayawada, and Eluru.
VISVA's main goal is to save the environment by educating and motivating people to live sustainably. They aim to promote minimal lifestyles, address plastic-related concerns, and professionally manage waste by visiting schools and other institutions. On a larger scale, the foundation wishes to revive water bodies and polluted areas through community cleanups and by using environmentally friendly restoration methods. Besides this, they want to develop leadership qualities in volunteers while following the "7 R's" strategy: "Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Refurbish, Pyrolysis, Recycle, and Incinerate" to ensure responsible use of resources.
VISVA has had tremendous environmental impact with its "Earth Needs You" (ENY) projects, running more than 708 cleanup projects and impacting over 225,000 people. Through these efforts, more than 50 tons of waste were removed, 20+ tons of which were recycled. In the realm of event management, the foundation has also successfully managed waste at numerous large-scale events, with more than 4,000 kgs of waste processed during the 2024 Hyderabad Marathon alone. They have also recorded 18 species of birds on biodiversity walks and given professional training to more than 28 "Safai Sathis" (sanitation workers) on sustainable waste practices.
In addition, they are involved in "Zero Waste / Plastic-free Event Management" at events like marathons, festivals, and weddings. Through on-site segregation and recycling, they make sure that the trash is diverted from landfills. Alongside, their "Saaman" shop has products friendlier to the environment, including bamboo toothbrushes and bio-enzymes. They also offer a round-the-clock programme that includes biodiversity documentation, planting trees, and meditation for environmental harmony.
As a civil society organization, VISVA contributes to climate activism by bridging individual awareness with systemic waste reduction. They engage a broad volunteer pool of professionals to do direct work and turn people's worries about the environment into real things, such as how much trash is prevented from going into the landfill and how much is recycled.
